When I was in highschool, I used to listen to their songs a lot. I remember sitting alone in our living room floor, staring at the blank ceiling, holding a copy of their album If I left the Zoo, just letting the melody of their songs sink in my empty being. O di ba, emo? Hehe.
It was back when I hadn't come to the knowledge of salvation. I didn't understand what the messages of their songs were saying but just listening to each one somehow calms the troubled spirit in me. Now I realize how powerful their songs are.
While writing this, the track Sinking is playing in the background. See lyrics below:
It's not my problem anymore
You see it never really was
So you can stop 'caring' as you call it
and I'll be fine right here
You see that I can play a pretty convincing role
So I don't need you, I don't think I need You
[Chorus:]
But you see through my forever lies
And you are not believing
And I see in your forever eyes
That you are forever healing
You can't hear what I'm not saying
And I can hold out long enough
Treading water I keep from sinking
I'm not one for reaching
You see that I can play a pretty convincing role
So I don't need you, I don't think I need you
[Bridge:]
Deny myself, deny my heart
Deny Your hand, deny Your help
and You offer me eternity
but why should I buy that?
You see that I can play a pretty convincing role
So I don't need you, I don't think I need you
SO WHAT NOW?
I can actually hear the voice of someone speaking through this song. Someone tired, desperate, in great pain, in an attempt to commit suicide, lonely, terrified, alone, LOST.
Whoever you are: you may put on all the biggest inflatables in the world to keep yourself from sinking but you'll never make it to shore without a boat. He is in that boat. He who can calm the storm. It's JESUS. He thinks about you day and night but He doesn't grow tired.
You may think you're not one for reaching but even if it wasn't your choice, He chose to stretch out both His hands for you. He's not asking for anything back. Just BELIEVE.
JESUS LOVES YOU!
You are not trash.
You are that treasure in His jar of clay.
He died for you.
Malachi 1:2
“I have loved you,”
says the LORD.
I found this testimony on Sing 365:
To all of the members of Jars of Clay:
I have been listening to your music for about 4 years. I want you to know with all sincerity that God speaks His truth through the gifts He gave you; and it has always been a tremendous blessing in my life. This particular album has got me through many difficult times, including the infidelity and drug abuse by my husband and the premature physical deterioration of my body...

Although the band has no permanent drummer or bassist, Jeremy Lutito and Gabe Ruschival of Disappointed By Candy fill these roles for live concerts.
The band's name is derived from the New International Version's translation of
2 Corinthians 4:7:
“But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.”
